People who suffer from type 2 diabetes need a medication that will help them get their blood sugar levels under control. Victoza diabetes medication is an effective drug that rises to this challenge. The main ingredient in Victoza – liraglutide – belongs to the group of GLP-1 receptor agonists, it stimulates the secretion of insulin by the pancreas. Although the effectiveness of Victoza is undoubted, many people cannot take this medication because of the serious side effects that it causes, or because it does not work for them. In such cases doctors prescribe Victoza alternative drugs, other injections or oral medications that function similarly to Victoza. Controlling diabetes might not be too difficult and sometimes patients wouldn’t even have to resort to such medications as Victoza – diet, regular exercise, and healthy life choices are very important factors in controlling diabetes. However, if a patient still needs to take medications in order to control their diabetes, and for some reasons they cannot take Victoza, their doctor can prescribe them Victoza alternative drugs that might work just as effectively and whose price is lower than that of Victoza.
Farxiga (Dapagliflozin) – pills that can be taken with some other diabetes medications. Farxiga lowers blood sugar levels as well as helps you lose weight. If compared to Victoza diabetes medication, it does not lower glucose level just as effectively, but, on the other hand, the risk of getting hypoglycemia with Farxiga is pretty low. This medication can increase the risk of getting an infection of urinary tract or a genital yeast, though. It can also increase cholesterol and is highly dangerous for those who consume a lot of alcohol. Approximate price – $450.
Tanzeum (Albiglutide) can be useful if Victoza administration didn’t yield satisfactory results, but the risk of getting a thyroid cancer is very high with this medication. The advantages of this medication are: the injection is only taken once a week; it helps with the weight-loss problem; as opposed to other medications of this type, it doesn’t cause as many stomach and intestine problems. On the downside, Tanzeum is less effective than Victoza medication in what concerns blood sugar levels decrease. Although it doesn’t cause serious stomach and intestine problems, it is not recommended to people who already have these issues, and, just as well as Victoza, it does not substitute insulin. Approximate price – $550.
Invokana (Canagliflozin) – the drug is taken once daily before meals, it reduces blood sugar and the risk of hypoglycemia with this medication is not high, however, there is a high probability of getting yeast or infections of urinary tract because of this medication. While people can use Victoza injection for weight loss with great success, Invokana is not as effective as Victoza in this matter. Invokana can be the cause of a very serious side effect, which is rarely encountered, but still possible – food or leg infections that can lead to amputation, so people who are taking this medication should be very careful and address their doctor immediately at the very slight sign of feet pain or infection. The drug can also raise cholesterol levels and is not recommended for use in people with kidney issues. Approximate price – $450.
Glucotrol (Glipizide) – pills used in order to lower blood sugar. Glucotrol is an extremely effective medication and it lowers blood sugar levels even better than liraglutide (Victoza), but, on the other hand, it can decrease the level of blood sugar too much, so if you are taking this medication, you should always have some kind of ready-to-use sugar on you for an emergency case. This medication can be taken by people with kidney issues, and it has generic versions, so its use will not cost you a lot of money. While taking Glucotrol, you should check your glucose levels from 2 to 5 times a week. As opposed to Victoza weight loss drug, Glucotrol can lead to some weight gain. Approximate price – $6.
Jardiance (Empagliflozin) pills – a medicine for glycemic control that can also help with weight loss. The drug increases the risk of yeast infections, but it can be a good solution for people with heart issues, as it decreases the risk of having a stroke, heart attack or heart failure. The medication is known to help with weight loss, it does not usually provoke hypoglycemia, but it is known to cause dehydration. Approximate price – $451.
Januvia (Sitagliptin) pills – a good Victoza alternative for those who need to control their blood sugar level, but do not want to use injections. The medication does not aggravate heart problems as other similar medications. As a rule, the medication does not lead to weight gain and low blood sugar levels. Frequently-reported side effects include symptoms characteristic of cold. Approximate price – $415.
Byetta (Exenatide) – injections that should be taken twice a day. The medication does not boost appetite as some similar medications do, and it is not likely to drop your blood sugar levels too low. Like Victoza pen, Byetta injections are sold ready-to-use; each pen containing 1 dose of the medication. The drug is known to cause stomach issues. Common adverse reactions of
Byetta are similar to Victoza side effects – they include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and indigestion. Byetta is known to interact with antibiotics and birth control pills; it can affect the way these medications work. In order to be sure that Byetta doesn’t affect the effectiveness of these medications, take them at least an hour after the Byetta injection. Approximate price – $691.
There are many more medications that could work as alternative drugs for Victoza, but they cannot be regarded as Victoza generic versions, even if they have a similar action.
Whichever medication you need, make sure you consult a specialist prior to starting any kind of treatment.
